What is it

Pad printing is an indirect gravure printing technique that uses a silicone pad to transfer ink from an etched printing plate (cliché) onto an object's surface. The process involves applying ink to the etched plate, then a doctor blade removes excess ink, leaving only the ink in the recessed image area. A flexible silicone pad then presses onto the plate, picks up the ink image, and subsequently presses onto the object to deposit the ink. The unique advantage of this process lies in the silicone pad's ability to deform and conform perfectly to various non-flat, curved, or irregular surfaces, enabling high-precision printing. Pad printing is widely used for applying fine details or text to small, complex-shaped products such as electronic components, medical devices, or promotional gifts.

Best for

  • Pens and Stationery
  • Electronic Product Casings and Buttons
  • Medical Device Components
  • Golf Balls
  • Small Toys and Figurines
  • Custom Keychains

Materials

  • Plastics (ABS, PVC, PP, PC)
  • Metals
  • Glass
  • Ceramics
  • Wood
  • Silicone
  • Coated Surfaces

Advantages

  • **High Adaptability**: Can precisely print on irregular, curved, concave-convex, or cylindrical non-flat surfaces.
  • **Fine Detail Capability**: Capable of reproducing extremely small text (minimum line width down to 0.1mm) and intricate graphic details.
  • **Multi-color Registration**: Allows for accurate multi-color printing, enabling complex designs.
  • **Wide Material Compatibility**: Applicable to various materials including plastics, metals, glass, ceramics, and wood, with excellent adhesion.
  • **Production Efficiency**: Offers good production speed and cost-effectiveness for batch production of small to medium-sized objects.

Limitations

  • **Limited Print Area**: The print area per cycle is relatively small, making it unsuitable for large-format or full-surface designs.
  • **Thin Ink Layer**: The ink layer is typically thin, not ideal for applications requiring a tactile, raised, or thick ink feel.
  • **Setup Costs for Color Changes**: Each color or design change requires a new etched plate, increasing setup time and cost.
  • **Not for Extremely Rough Surfaces**: Ink adhesion may be poor on extremely rough or highly porous materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) for pad printing?+
The MOQ for pad printing varies depending on product size, number of print colors, and design complexity. Typically, we recommend starting from 100-500 pieces. As there are setup costs involved with creating the printing plates, larger quantities generally result in a lower unit cost and higher cost-effectiveness.
How small of text or graphics can pad printing reproduce?+
Pad printing is renowned for its precision. It can reproduce line widths as fine as approximately 0.1mm, and text heights around 0.5mm can still be clearly legible. This makes it ideal for products requiring high-precision marking, such as serial numbers or icons on electronic components.
How durable are pad-printed designs? Will they easily come off?+
The durability of pad-printed designs depends on the ink type used and the material of the object. We recommend suitable inks based on the product's intended use, such as those resistant to abrasion, scratches, alcohol, or chemical solvents. Generally, with the correct ink selection and proper curing, pad-printed designs exhibit good adhesion and durability, resisting easy removal.
Can pad printing achieve gradient color effects?+
Pad printing primarily excels in solid colors or multi-color overlays. Achieving smooth gradient color effects is more challenging and typically less natural than with digital printing or water transfer printing. If your design includes complex gradients or photographic images, it's advisable to consider other printing processes for optimal results. Pad printing is better suited for clear lines and solid color blocks.
